Shock of the New

TASCHEN’s Guide to the Digital Art Revolution

Robert Alice’s On NFTs is the first major art historical survey text on the most compelling, disruptive area of contemporary art today. A rigorous and critical examination of all facets of the NFT ecosystem, On NFTs takes a multidimensional, artist-led approach, leaving its readers with a richer understanding of a topic often shrouded in misconception and pixelated mystery.

The book, presented in TASCHEN’s iconic grand-scale BABY SUMO format, covers a wide range of essential information for both those new to or experienced with the modern medium. Featuring 10 essays from the world’s leading voices in art and the blockchain, including Hans Ulrich Obrist, On NFTs is a book that celebrates unlikely and thought-provoking connections from across art history. Expect illustrations of Rembrandt paintings alongside CryptoPunk avatars, extensive essays explaining the nitty-gritty world of NFTs—including Sol LeWitt’s influence on today’s artistic algorithms—as well as behind-the-scenes glimpses of the creative processes of pioneering artists from Beeple and Emily Xie to Snowfro and Refik Anadol.

Accompanying the 10 essays, On NFTs presents a co-curated survey of 101 key practices working in NFTs today. With each profile uniquely authored by handpicked experts, including curators, critics, artists, and AI, On NFTs embraces diverse and global voices to navigate this borderless movement. Perfect for both natives and newcomers, On NFTs features an extensive glossary of key terms, and a comprehensive exhibition history and timeline of the digital art canon.

Developed iteratively over a number of years, Ironic Dessert (2023) is a standalone output from an algorithm born from a deep exploration of the division of three-dimensional spaces, conceptualizing and reconstructing them as a “chain of blocks.” A deeply skilled engineer and coder, Dmitri Cherniak's Ironic Dessert is a testament to the artist’s investigation of form and pattern, brought to life through the precise application of his code. Ironic Dessert culminates as a work that not only showcases Cherniak's innovative use of automation as an artistic medium, inviting audiences to explore the harmonious intersection between art and algorithms, but it also connects personally to him, evoking memories of rainbow cookies made by his grandmother.

Art Edition (No. 1–100) with the NFT Ironic Dessert (2023) by Dmitri Cherniak, an accompanying print of the NFT, signed by the artist, and the book On NFTs in a stainless steel slipcase.

Also available in a Collector's Edition, in The Hard Code Edition, and in three alternative Art Editions in a stainless steel slipcase with NFTs and accompanying signed prints from artists Refik Anadol, Sofia Crespo, and Osinachi.

The editor

Robert Alice makes art, exhibitions, and books that explore blockchains and their histories. The first artist to auction an NFT at a major auction house, their work Portraits of a Mind (2019–) was pivotal to the NFT space’s growth. In 2023, the Monnaie de Paris held one of the first European museum solo NFT shows on their work. In 2022, Alice, who lectures globally, co-produced the first academic conference on NFTs at the University of Oxford. Alice’s work is part of the permanent collections of several institutions, including the Centre Pompidou, Paris.

The artist

Dmitri Cherniak (born 1988) is a Canadian artist and coder residing in New York City, celebrated for his distinctive algorithmic art that catapulted him to become one of the leading artists working with NFTs. FAQ’s

NFTs, short for Non-Fungible Tokens, are unique digital assets that are cryptographically secured on a blockchain, enabling their exchange and transfer. NFTs are often associated with digital content like images, videos, or audio files.

Minting is the process of creating a new NFT. When you redeem your Art Edition NFT, you will go through the minting process to generate your unique digital collectible, registering it on the Ethereum blockchain.

As the claim process is secured through a scratch off within the physical copy of the book, you will be able to claim your NFT upon delivery of your Art Edition book.

The claim function for your NFT has been inserted physically into your book. Upon your receival of your On NFTs Art Edition, all minting details will be provided, including a claim code and link to TASCHEN's online claim portal.

Each On NFTs Art Edition comes with one NFT.

You can use an existing Ethereum wallet or opt to use Crossmint, which offers the option to pay with a credit card via a custodial wallet solution.

Crypto wallets securely store your private keys, which are like passwords granting you access to your NFTs and cryptocurrency. They ensure the safe and convenient sending and receiving of NFTs and digital currencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum.

To mint your Art Edition NFT you will only need to pay a small transaction fee for the claim. For those using an Ethereum digital wallet, you will need up to 0.05 Eth to cover the transaction fee. If you are minting the NFT using your credit card, there will be a small fee of a few dollars.

Hosting and functionality for the claim system on taschen.com will be supported for a minimum of 2 years post launch.

The architecture of the claim process is such that it can be done directly on the blockchain itself, without the need for a third party such as TASCHEN, for as long as Ethereum exists. Should you wish to claim your Art Edition NFT directly via the blockchain, detailed instructions will be made available via email, social media, and on taschen.com in due course.
