Intimate portraits of John and Yoko

Renowned for his sensual, provocative images, Kishin Shinoyama is one of Japan’s most controversial and acclaimed artists, at once hailed by critics and charged for public indecency.

His capacity for ease and intimacyis perhaps most poignantly expressed in his beautiful series of photographs of Yoko Ono and John Lennon, shot for the cover and promotion of the couple’s celebrated 1980 album, Double Fantasy, just three months before Lennon’s untimely death. Featuring many previously unseen images, the series resonates with a remarkable honesty, and immortalizes this iconic couple at a pivotal moment in their personal and creative relationship.

Art Edition (No. 1–125), signed by Yoko Ono and Kishin Shinoyama, each with a pigment print signed by Shinoyama.

Also available as a second Art Edition (No. 126–250) with an alternative signed print by Shinoyama and as a signed Collector’s Edition (No. 251–1,980).
The photographer

Kishin Shinoyama (1940–2024) began shooting award-winning advertising photography while still a student at Nihon University. He started working as a freelance photographer in 1968 and gained fame for his portraits, including those of Yukio Mishima, Momoe Yamaguchi, Rie Miyazawa, and John Lennon and Yoko Ono, and for his artistic nudes of women. His 1980 photoshoot with Lennon and Ono – which resulted in the cover image of their album Double Fantasy – was one of the last photos of Lennon ever taken.
