The second Marvel character to spring from the legendary creative collaboration of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in the early 1960s was a far cry from the Fantastic Four’s recognizable family dynamics and globe-trotting super heroics. Stephen J. «Steve» Ditko est né en 1927 en Pennsylvanie. Il suivit l’enseignement de Jerry Robinson à la Cartoonists and Illustrators School de New York avant d’être employé par Atlas Comics, précurseur de Marvel, au milieu des années 1950. Il se fit un nom en tant qu’illustrateur et co-créateur de Spiderman, avec Stan Lee, et comme créateur de Docteur Strange. De 1958 à 1967, Ditko partagea un atelier avec Eric Stanton et la légende veut que les deux hommes aient contribué aux œuvres l’un de l’autre, notamment sur On a Kinky Hook et Sweeter Gwen d’Eric Stanton.
Jack Kirby (1917–1994) est une légende des comics, dont il fut un des artistes les plus prolifiques. Il a notamment participé à la création de Captain America, des Avengers, des X-Men, de l’Incroyable Hulk, d’Ant-Man, du S.H.I.E.L.D. et de Thor.
John Romita Sr. était un artiste de comics américain, principalement connu pour son travail sur The Amazing Spider-Man, qu’il dessina pendant sept ans après que Steve Ditko a quitté soudainement Marvel en 1966. Romita devint le directeur artistique de Marvel en 1973 et participa à la création de nombreux personnages phare de la maison, parmi lesquels Mary Jane Watson, Wolverine, le Punisher, le Caïd et Luke Cage. Il est décédé en 2023, à 93 ans.
Stan Lee (1922–2018) est, pour des millions de gens, l’homme dont les super-héros ont propulsé Marvel au firmament de la bande dessinée. Il a en effet participé à la création de Spider-Man, L’Incroyable Hulk, X-Men, des Quatre Fantastiques, d’Iron Man et de centaines d’autres figures. Président honoraire de Marvel, il fut aussi directeur de la création de POW! Entertainment au sein duquel il créa de nombreux autres personnages et histoires dans des domaines tels que l’édition, le cinéma, la télé-réalité, le théâtre, le documentaire et le multimédia.

Douglas Wolk est un auteur, lauréat de plusieurs prix Eisner pour All of the Marvels et Reading Comics; il écrit sur les comics et la musique pop dans le New York Times, le Time, le Washington Post, Rolling Stone et The Believer, entre autres. Il enseigne l’histoire des comics à la Portland State University.
