Kishin Shinoyama
(1940–2024)
We are saddened to hear of the passing of Kishin Shinoyama. Shinoyama started working as a freelance photographer in 1968 and gained fame for his portraits, including those of Yukio Mishima, Momoe Yamaguchi, Rie Miyazawa, and John Lennon and Yoko Ono. His 1980 photoshoot with Lennon and Ono produced some of the last images of Lennon ever taken. As a photographer, Shinoyama had a keen awareness of fleeting time and was a master of both new methods of expression and naturalism. It was Ono’s idea for him to create the book Double Fantasy, calling the photographs from their 5‑day shoot together “images of my happiest time”.
